With the school year beginning, questions about Homecoming started to arise. The official Homecoming theme was announced 3 weeks before the dress up days, with the Dress Up themes being announced on the 5th of September.
The 18th was Neon Day, the 19th was Duo/Group Day, the 20th was Fantabulous Fads + Fashion, the 21st was “I Want My MTV”, and the 22nd was Raider Spirit.
Neon Day made for a lot of cute outfits although it didn’t leave room for anyone to be creative, everyone looked the exact same.
I think that Duo/Group day also shed light on some amazing ideas. I especially liked Mr. Oulman, Ms. Budny, Ms. Neumann and Ms. Gunkel dressed as the Golden Girls, and Mr. Elbine and Ms. Ana as the twins from “The Shining.”
For the fads from the 80’s, everyone who dressed up brought their best to the table. From teachers rocking leg warmers to students with denim outfits it was all amazing.
“I Want My MTV” day brought out some interesting costumes. The most interesting to me was the social studies department being people from a rock band, with their black wigs and black eye makeup, they absolutely did their thing.
Raider Spirit Day brought everyone together, whether people were decked out in their Senior overalls or their Rangeview shirts, or even just wearing red and black, everyone’s school spirit came out in the best way.
Though the dress up days weren’t my favorite, the class hallways looked so good.
Upstairs I loved the posters on all the walls. They were really good this year. I loved the sayings on the posters, for example in the Freshman hallway one poster said “Fresh Forever.” Another poster in the Junior hallway said “25 Up High.”
The Junior hallway downstairs looked better than everyone else downstairs. The Princess Diana cutout and the execution of making the train of her dress was flawless. I especially liked the pictures that showed some of what the Juniors are like outside of school. It’s a really nice way of including many by having them be included in the hallway somehow. I also really enjoyed the slinkies hung from the roof. I loved the little mats on the floor representing a game of Pac-Man in the Junior hallway, with names on the mats and then the characters for the game of Pac-Man drawn on the mats with more names.
In the Senior hallway upstairs I liked the lights and how everyone’s name was on the cassettes attached. The same goes for their downstairs hallway with how they all signed the black arch way. I loved the Seniors downstairs hallway even more than their upstairs hallway. The posters with all the song lyrics from the 80’s was like a blast from the past. Anytime I walked past their hallways I just felt like singing the songs and listening to them on repeat. In the hallway were little decorations that were fun to notice like the vinyl record cutouts and the fun neon shapes.
The downstairs hallways that the Sophomores and the Freshman decorated lowered my overall rating of the decor.
The Sophomores did the bare minimum with their downstairs hallway, although their “Back to the Future” window was cool. I also liked how they had vines hanging down from the roof of their hallway.
The Freshman hallway looks like they didn’t try at all, like they wanted to be done with it so bad that they just put no effort in. While the theme of the Freshman hallway was supposed to be “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” I don’t think they clearly portrayed it other than in their window.
Overall, Homecoming week was fun but the theme set back the full excitement of the week. I think from the second the theme was announced, people had given up on the possibility of having fun.
