Girls Volleyball is a very competitive and prominent sport in the culture of Rangeview High School, but Rangeview’s girls varsity team went 12-11 in in a disappointing last season.
They played a competitive schedule and had a record over .500, narrowly missing the playoffs. The season ended with three losses in a row in their last tournament that could’ve changed the tide. This year’s team has a very promising future with a returning roster including senior captains Anika Davison and Maddie Kilmer and a pair of important transfers.
“I am really happy with how I’ve progressed as a leader and as a player on the court, with getting more aggressive on offense, and coming into being team captain and leader on the team,” said captain Anika Davison.
Davison had also shared her hopes for this season feeling good about their team and the future of their season. Kilmer followed with their goals and hopes for their season being very high, and hoping to make it to playoffs this year. She shared the fact that for the past three years they have fallen short and have been on the bubble of playoffs but this year they want to change that.
They have high hopes of playing high level and very competitive volleyball and as Davison stated, “ This is a hope for me as well as for the rest of our team.” They also shared that over the past few years they have had the potential to beat a lot of the teams that they have lost to and hope to reach that potential this season. They both shared their perspectives as being leaders on the team and shared that the pressure that comes with it with having to be “consistent role models” on the court due to the fact players may be looking up to them without them even knowing.
The captains also voiced that Rhian Vargas has made a move up to varsity and is a great addition to their team as well. Since she was a freshman they have had high hopes for her and hope to help her grow and improve as a Rangeview volleyball player. When asked about challenges they talked about their completely new schedule and facing teams that they haven’t faced before. Kilmer said, “We are all excited to face a new level of competition, it may come off as a challenge but it is one that we are ready to take on.” Another challenge that they voiced was trying to keep it together when they faced hardships and things of that nature, but they also voiced how it was all part of the game and did not fear what was coming next.
This year’s starting lineup consists of Maddie Kilmer, Anika Davidson, Shylin Collins, Lauren Forte, Birikt Bitew and Briana Garcia. “I am super excited about them, we have a strong group of 9 varsity starters meshing together very well,” said Coach Powell.
When asked about her starting lineup she also stated that their schedule is the most difficult that it has been in recent years and they are very excited for the challenges this season and will overcome them. This team and season of volleyball looks very promising and we are very excited for our Lady Raiders.
