Before jumping into winter break — which is just a few weeks away — consider some of these novels to sit back, relax, and read next to a warm fireplace and a cup of hot chocolate. From historical fiction to comics/anime, the Review’s top 10 list is a great way to find just the right book.

10. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

Wuthering Heights begins in the 1800 Victorian England era. The story follows the doomed love story of Catherine Earnshaw and orphan, Heathcliff, as they face the repercussions of social classes. The novel is a mix of storytelling, vengeful planning, and lost love.

9. In a Dark Dark Woods by Ruth Ware

In a Dark Dark Woods is a murder mystery that occurs in a glass house, in the middle of the woods. The main character, Nora,  reunites with high school friends for a bachelorette party that goes terribly wrong. No secrets last forever and no friendship can survive.

Sophomore Melanie Aguirre said, “It is suspenseful in its entirety. Even though so much is revealed at the beginning, you’re still confused and anxious for more.”

8. Humans of New York by Brandon Stanton

Although it was published a while back, this book is about capturing the personalities of the inhabitants of New York. Stanton, the author, travels on foot to capture pictures, quotes and anecdotes in over 400 pictures bound together in this (mostly) vibrant picture book.

7. Reign: The Prophecy by Lily Blake

You may have heard of the CW hit TV show, Reign, that finished its last season this year; well, did you know that it was based off of a book series? The Prophecy by Lily Blake is book one of the series that follows Mary, Queen of Scots, and her reign. Reign is based on accurate historical events that happened in 1500 Europe and the Monarchies of England, France, and Scotland. It is filled with action, romance, adventure, and real historical facts you can impress teachers with!

6. Renegades by Marissa Meyer (Sci-Fi/fantasy)

Author of the popular book series, The Lunar Chronicles, recently published a new sci-fi book on Nov. 7th.  The main character Nova, hates the Renegades, who happen to be humans with extraordinary powers.  She meets people along the way on her mission for revenge in a book of adventure and thrills.

5.  Origin by Dan Brown

This story follows Robert Langdon, a Harvard professor who goes to a museum event to hear of a breakthrough that was discovered by his former student, now billionaire Edmond Kirsch.  The story is set in Spain, and follows daring and risky Langdon’s escape after a disaster strikes at the controversial event.

4. Go Ask Alice by Beatrice Sparks

Go Ask Alice is a diary of an anonymous teenage girl as she comes face-to-face with growing up and falling into the wrong path. This novel deals with the struggles of teenagers, self destruction, depression, sexual harassment, drugs, and death; needless to say, it is not for the light hearted. The novel was published by the teenager’s therapist in hopes of raising awareness on the issues teens face, and to try to prevent others from going down the dark path this teenager went through.

3. Injustice: God Among Us by Tom Taylor and Jheremy Raapack (Comic/Anime)

For DC universe fans, this comic series bring a new twists on superheroes Superman, Batman, and many more. The comic series, Injustice: God Among Us, acts as a prequel to the video game by the same name. The storyline revolves around Superman, who resolves to place a new world order to make up for the tragedy he caused.

2. The Maze Runner Series by James Dashner

The Maze Runner is a dystopian series written by James Dashner that has inspired the major motion pictures “The Maze Runner” and “The Scorch Trials”. The series takes place in a flare-infested world where only a select few have the biological DNA to survive. The story follows Thomas and his friends as they try to fight the antagonists from W.C.K.D and the traitor hidden in their group.

“It’s kind of a stereotypical apocalypse, but I would definitely recommend it,” said sophomore Tazz Schreffle.  

1. Art of Harry Potter by Marc Sumerak

The Art of Harry Potter includes hundreds of paintings, sketches, concept art, and many other mediums of art. Harry Potter fans such as Junior Emily Barents are looking forwards to the visual continuation of the magical world.

“It definitely looks very interesting, I’m always interested in the in-depth [drawings] and the nice art,” Barents said.  The Art of Harry Potter came out on November 21st, 2017.
