Since the track team first hit the blocks in the start of the season, many say they haven’t slowed down. Out of the eight meets that they have participated in so far this season, the team has placed third overall four times.
Many say one of the reasons why the team has had this type of success this early in the season is because of junior Dawnielle Lewis. Currently, Lewis holds the fourth fastest time in the state for the girls in the 100m and the 3rd fastest time in the 200m. She’s also a part of the 4x100m relay team that holds the 3rd fastest time.
Head coach Chris Carhartt says, “Dawnie, in my opinion, is the best athlete at Rangeview and one of the best in state… she takes our team to a whole different level.”
Since Lewis started running varsity track her freshman year, she hasn’t gone a year without making it to state. Last year, she placed 2nd in the 200m and 3rd in the 100. For Lewis, a new year means new goals.
Lewis says, “My current goals are to drop my 200m time to a 23.9 and my 100m time to drop to a 11.8.”
Lewis has a chance to do just that at her next meet at the EMAC Championships at Brighton High School on Thursday, May 3rd. When finding motivation to continue to get better at track, Lewis has a lot of things that keep her going.
Lewis says, “Track keeps me in shape and I hate losing, so it motivates me even more to beat my competitors.”
With one more meet before qualifications for state, many are excited to see what type of ending Lewis and the team will have to their season; including the rest of her teammates.
Senior captain Sophia Bambury says, “with the type of season we’ve had so far, I’m sure we’ll finish out strong and a couple of us will qualify for state.”
