Feature Photo By: Irl Paulalengan – A piece of ceramics burns in the raku process. “[Raku firing] is a ceramic glaze firing technique called reduction,” said Mrs. Ryan, art teacher. “We take the piece, we heat it up really hot, we take it out, put it in a trash can and set it on fire.” Although this firing technique is “dangerous,” as Mrs. Ryan describes, she still brought the students to see the process closely. “When you’re like five feet away from something that’s 1800 degrees, most people never see that hot and it’s just a cool experience,” she said.
