Last season the girls volleyball team, lead by coach Doug Walker, went 17-8 and ending up with a second place in EMAC. Chelsie Thompson, Jackie McBride,sr., Kelsie Hurtado,sr. and Tyler Speller,jr. all finished last year in All-EMAC First Team. Rangeview’s Shannon Bradford made All-EMAC Second Team.
This years team will be hurt by the loss of four seniors to graduation, among them was Chelsie Thompson. After dishing out 620 assists last season, Chelsie’s position at setter is going to be a tough one to fill. However not impossible as the raiders still have high goals for the season.
Junior Colleen Kimball said their team goals are, “To beat Gateway, win as much as possible, and to keep a positive attitude towards each other.” According to Colleen Kimball freshman Lexi Hurtado, will be taking on the task of filling the hole left by former setter Chelsie Thompson
“She may be our youngest player, as our only freshman, but don’t underestimate her, her sets are consistent and (she) is quick on her feet.” Melany Chavez added.
Melany also has high expectations about this upcoming season “Only a few girls on the team graduated last season so we have mostly the original players this year… I am determined to make it to state this year.”
The girls volleyball first game is August 27th, at 6:30 pm at Rangeview High School against Fairview.
