Returning to school following Winter Break means there is a plethora of sicknesses spreading throughout the student body. Cold and flu season puts many at risk, but luckily there are many ways to prevent enduring an awful sickness and stop the spread.
1. Boost Your Immune System
This includes maintaining a healthy diet, a consistent sleep schedule, and getting exercise. When we care for our bodies, we are better prepared to fight infection. Not only will practicing these habits help prevent colds and the flu, but they also prevent a multitude of other diseases which will pay off in the long run.
2. Wash Your Hands Frequently
During flu season, making sure to wash your hands is more crucial than ever. The more frequently you wash your hands after contact with others or a potentially contaminated surface, the more protected you will be from germs. Ensure you wash your hands thoroughly; the CDC recommends scrubbing for at least 20 seconds.
3. Keep Your Distance
Although staying away from people who may be sick can be difficult in a school setting, you must minimize contact as much as possible when someone begins showing signs of sickness. That is why it is also important to stay home when you are sick so you can help reduce the spread. Some individuals may have a harder time fighting off infection, which may lead to serious complications. Therefore it is never worth it to risk others’ health.
4. Get Vaccinated
The most effective way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated against it. According to the Mayo Clinic, getting your flu shot reduces the risk of contracting the illness by 40% to 60%. Free flu shots are available at nearly every Walgreens pharmacy–all you have to do is book an appointment online. By getting vaccinated, you can protect not only yourself but also your loved ones.
