The month of February is commonly known to be the month for love, although Rom-Coms can be seen throughout the year the best time to watch them is during February and especially Valentine’s Day, whether you can relate to the movies or watch it as an outlook. Rom-Coms are always a good watch with both genres of Romance and Comedy. Most of the movies are fun watches, but there will always be a top 10 of any genre.
10.La La Land (2016)
Last place on the list is a movie that is more of a musical than a comedy. It still has romance, but it’s not really a rom-com compared to the other movies on the list. La La Land has won several awards and it deserves it. It’s a love story between Mia and Sebastian, we get to see these two fall in love, go on several dates and just learn to love this couple. The two would always support each other on what they wanted to do, and with this their chemistry was unmatched. Especially with the main stars being Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds. However, this movie is not higher on the list because of the ending. They don’t end up together. We watch the two break up expecting them to get back together, because they broke up to follow their dreams, but instead Mia is a famous actress with a new boyfriend and Sebastian opened a Jazz club. They achieved their dreams they talked about, but not together.
This movie includes a scene where Mia walks into a familiar place being Sebastian’s club as she drew the logo and sees him again after so long. Sebastian is playing a song on the piano and as they look at each other it shows what they could have been. Although this movie is realistic in the sense of what relationships are, people watch movies to see what they don’t have, making this the last movie on the list. It’s still on the list because it’s an amazing movie, but it needs to be turned off after seeing what they could have been and making this the ending.
9.Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011)
Crazy, Stupid, Love is a movie that’s different from most as this one includes different perspectives from the different characters making this a comedy movie with some romance. This movie is another movie with several different actors and actresses who are naturally funny in every role. Such as Steve Carell, Ryan Reynolds, and Emma Stone. It starts off with Cal Weaver discovering his wife has been cheating on him leading to wanting a divorce. Not a strong start to a romance movie. Weaver becomes sad because this is the woman he has been with for 40 years. Trying to get over her he meets Jacob Palmer, a player. Palmer sees his sadness and teaches him his ways into meeting ladies. Weaver is now the player, but Palmer meets someone who he decides to give up that life for, Hannah. The two have a sweet romance where he decides he wants to meet her parents not knowing what they expect. It is shown Cal is her dad. This makes Weaver furious as this was the guy who taught him how to be a player and is now with his daughter. This movie is a fun watch as it has different characters and stories that will keep you entertained the whole movie learning how every character is connected in some way.
8.The Wedding Planner (2001)
Starring Jennifer Lopez and Matthew Mcconaughey, The Wedding Planner is an unappreciated classic about a wedding planner who falls in love with one of her clients. Mary Flore, a wedding planner, was walking when her heel got caught on the road, an incoming dumpster nearly running her over was prevented when Steve Edison pushed her out of the way. This was the first interaction between the two. They went out to watch a movie sharing M&M’s and danced together before it started to rain. This romantic moment between the two had Flore thinking she finally had some luck in love, but it turns out, the wedding she was going to plan was for Edison and his fiance.
Flore and Edison work alongside each other with Flore being angry he lied to her and almost kissed her while having a fiance. She didn’t let this affect her job, but at the end before Edison’s wedding she was going to get married with someone else who she didn’t like. This didn’t end up happening. Both Flore and Edison knew they fell in love with each other, ending up together at the end. Watching the two characters have an instant connection when they first met and then throughout the movie just makes this a favorite movie to watch.
7.The Proposal (2009)
7th place is The Proposal–a movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock–already making it a good rom-com. This movie is a romance between two coworkers Margaret Tate and Andrew Paxton, Tate is his boss, being a book editor and Paxton is her assistant. The two are forced into a fake relationship because Tate was going to be deported causing her to lose her job. In order to prevent this from happening she says Paxton is her fiance. It isn’t that easy between them; they now had to fake their marriage and actually act like a couple soon to be married.
This is a movie where the comedy aspect is strong, whereas several of these movies are carried by romance. This has both, but mostly comedy. It’s a funny movie with several well known actors and actresses. With rom-coms, the romance also needs to be there and although this was a fake relationship seeing Tate and Paxton try to pretend to be a couple makes watchers root for them into becoming an actual couple.
6.27 Dresses (2008)
“Always a bridesmaid, never a bride.”
This phrase is said throughout the movie, 27 Dresses. Jane Nichols played by Katherine Heigl was a bridesmaid for 27 different weddings hence the title, 27 Dresses. Nichols is the type of person to put others before herself. In this case she was in love with the guy her sister was going to marry, but because of her caring personality she kept this a secret.
Even though she was in love with another man, a reporter named James Doyle is introduced in the movie. Doyle and Nichols would hang out, but the main reason Doyle was intrigued was because he saw her planner, seeing she had a lot of weddings to go to. The two eventually start getting closer, but as mentioned before Doyle was a reporter, he was writing a story about her to impress his editor. Nichols found out about the story and got mad he did this without her permission and saw what he truly thought about her. This movie gets 6th place as at the end Doyle and Nichlos get married where she has all the previous brides become her bridesmaids with the same dresses she had to wear. Jane Nichols finally became the bride.
5.Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
In the top five, the next movie is Sleepless In Seattle. This movie is older, coming out in 1993, with stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. After the tragedy of the death of Sam Baldwin’s wife, Baldwin thought there was no hope for love anymore. His son Jonah Baldwin talks on the radio station telling his dad’s story to all of Seattle. Several women all around hear the voice of a little boy talking about his dad, falling in love. This caused the women to write him letters reaching out. Jonah chooses one of the letters as his favorite, and told her to fly out to Seattle to meet his dad.
While his son does this, his dad didn’t know any of this was happening. The whole movie goes on while Baldwin and Annie Reed (the women who’s letter got chosen) barely miss each other every time, either by being across the street from each other, or by missing each other by a second. Although the movie makes the watcher a little mad at why they keep missing each other, towards the end everyone is rooting for the couple to get together making this a movie you can’t take your eyes off.
4.Pretty Woman (1990)
When Pretty Woman is mentioned, it’s either everyone knows what this movie is because of it being a classic, or they have no idea what this movie is. This is the classic rom-com that started it all. Again this movie doesn’t start with the right intention as the character Edward Lewis played by Richard Gere is a businessman who hires Vivan Ward played by Julia Roberts for the weekend. The two come from different worlds, which Ward starts to realize during the weekend they spent together. When buying a lot of stuff, she thinks there’s too big of a difference to be together. The weekend they spent together, they got closer eventually leading to them liking each other. This movie gets 4th place in the list because of two people from different world’s falling in love, meaning it’s possible for people who are different to fall in love.
3.50 First Dates (2004)
Waking up everyday, but forgetting everything that happened that same day is what Lucy Whitmore experienced in the movie 50 First Dates. This movie is in the top three because not only is the romance pure, but main character Henry Roth made Whitmore fall in love with him. Every. Single. Day. Although she wouldn’t remember him every day he would do a new thing to get to know her so they could be together. Although it was difficult for him to do this, he continued to show Whitmore and her family he was there for the long run. Roth would make a video everyday to show to her who he is and all their “first” dates so she could remember every morning to fall in love with him all over again. Overall this movie has several moments that make you say “Aw” as it has a lot of cute scenes between Whitmore and Roth making the movie top three of the best rom-coms. Not only because of the cute scenes, the chemistry between actors Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore is undeniable as they are in several movies together.
2.How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
One trying to make the other fall in love while the other one is trying to lose the other. Both Andie Anderson played by Kate Hudson and Benjamin Barry played by Matthew Mcconaughey, have a bet with their coworkers and friends to see how long each other could last. This movie is set in New York, as most rom-coms take place, but the movie excites viewers to see how Anderson is going to write her article “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” The motive behind this article was her friend and how she tended to “lose” a guy in a week.
On the other hand, Barry was seeing how fast he can get someone to fall in love with him to get an account. As many people say opposites attract, in this situation different situations attract. The combination of the two trying to do the opposite things caused the love to be stronger between the two. Although this failed when they figured out each other’s original plan they got past it, realizing it wasn’t for the bet or the story anymore. This story lands in second place because it is another one that didn’t start with the right intentions, but ended up with them falling in love.
1.10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
“I hate when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry.”
These lines said by Kat Stratford in 10 Things I Hate About You are a part of a poem dedicated to Patrick Verona, everytime these lines are recited it brings a tear to the eye and overall it is just memorable. Throughout this movie there are several scenes that make audiences believe in teenage love. Some scenes that come to mind are when Cameron James learns French for Bianca Stradford just for the fact to be with her or when Verona sings “Can’t Take My Eyes off You,” by Frank Sinatra to Kat during her soccer practice. The movie goes from a “fake” relationship to a relationship that everyone wants. Regardless of the wrong reasoning for the love story this falls at number one. With actors Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt the movie is an easy watch that steals the hearts of several with the perfect balance of romance and comedy.
