The freshmen class of 28’ has begun the school year along with new beginnings, new challenges, and a new era in their lives. The first full week has been completed and it has been such a journey for the freshmen. They experienced what it truly means to be a high school student by attending classes, back-to-school assemblies, and being introduced to new activities.
Six different freshmen were interviewed and asked about their first impressions, thoughts, opinions, and excitement for RHS.
Every freshman comes from a different background, bringing unique perspectives on high school. Ingrid Garcia came from Global Village Academy and stated, “High School is way much stricter on phones, especially with tardy checks.”
She also commented on workload saying, “The harder classes I took in middle school are way different from the hard classes here in high school, more challenging and sometimes an overload of work.”
When asked about expectations versus reality, freshman Marlena Ryland-Winter shared a common sentiment, “I thought it was going to be exactly like High School Musical, like the movies. Since I thought it was like the movies, I thought there were going to be bullies, like you know the ones that push you into lockers.”
But freshman Aaliyah Bernal Davis explained, “I felt like I was going to get lost easily, I was super nervous and scared to start.” Garcia had a different take, saying, “I had mixed feelings because I thought I wasn’t going to see my friends at all during the day. I was mostly nervous yet excited.”
Now, everyone knows that the prospect of high school is overhyped, the question arises, is it too overhyped? There seem to be some conflicting opinions among the freshmen when asked about this topic, as Perro Mona believes it isn’t overhyped, simply replying with, “No” when asked. Meanwhile, freshman Nyannah Sylvester says that High School is overhyped because it is “Draining and boring,” and, “The only thing fun about it is friends.” When Gracia was asked she stated, “Once sports start it’ll get more fun, especially with homecoming around the corner.”
Then they commented on their opinions about classes and teachers, in which most had positive answers. Freshman Evelyn Reynolds said, “The classes are pretty fun, and the teachers are nice.” Davis, who had a positive opinion of her teachers and classes, simply said she “Likes them.” She even mentioned that her favorite teachers were Sobolewski and Pickelsmier.
Now that their days in middle school are over, then came the question: Is it different from middle school?
Freshman Perro Mona stated, “In middle school, we didn’t have as much freedom like we do now in high school.”
Davis also had the same opinions, stating that, “Middle school is more strict, and high school is more chill,” which shows that Rangeview is more relaxed than middle school.
Since the first official week was finally over, the freshmen shared their experiences and thoughts about continuing the school year. Some were tired, excited, and others couldn’t wait to experience it fully. Sylvester said, “First week was very draining and tiring because every time I got home, I was completely tired.”
Although many were exhausted, some were ready for the school year and, “Can’t wait to get that full experience of high school,” Ryland-Winter said.
By the end of it, what are they most excited for? Rangeview comes with many opportunities, clubs, and sports.
Garcia explained, “I’m really excited to watch the volleyball games with my friends after school, try out for soccer, and go to as many football games as I could go to.”
Students like Ryland-Winter and Davis are looking forward to school events, especially homecoming week. Monna and Reynolds are excited to join sports teams that bring out more of the competitive side. Sylvester differs from the rest saying, “Getting a free period, getting money, getting to senior year.”
Senior year will come fast for freshmen! Enjoy all these four years before you all go out into the world as better and more open-minded young adults.
