Rangeview High School hosts an annual celebration called the Taste of Diaspora, where Black, African American, and Caribbean cultures are represented through many different dances, discussions, poetry, fashion, and performances. This year, it will be on Friday, the 21st of February at 5:30 pm. This event sheds some light on not only the cultures themselves, but how they intertwine with one another and the great effects they have worldwide. Each year a guest speaker is brought to discuss the contributions of these cultures and the backgrounds they bring to our community.
Rangeview senior, Soliana Mesfin, one of the presidents and coordinators of this showcase, states that a lot goes into planning and organizing this social function. “I’ve reached out to other high schools and cultural groups to coordinate performances,” she adds. Many local high schools will be featured, including Vista Peak, Eagle Crest, Overland, DSST:GVR, Cherokee Trail, Hinkley, and Smoky Hill. This powerful event truly honors the roots and creativity of all these different cultures.
Liz Mirembe, Rangeview sophomore, will be in the fashion show and is ecstatic to see everyone come together and celebrate each culture’s uniqueness. Many of the groups performing in this showcase have been practicing multiple times a week to prepare for their part in the event. For just $5 for admission, attendees will be able to take a closer look at all these beautiful cultures!
