As the new golf season is already underway, there is a sense of excitement about having new players and watching them discover the sport of golf. With a large roster of 16 players on the team this season and only 8 spots available for tournaments, the team plans to rotate players, giving everyone the chance to experience the competitiveness of being in a golf tournament.
A primary focus for the team this year is development, especially with many freshmen and new players joining. A big emphasis from Coach Oulman was “players putting in the right amount of work to get better”. Additionally, the team has also been putting in work on improving their putting skills over the offseason, and recognizing it’s a critical area of the sport.
For many players on the golf team, it is their first time playing the sport of golf, so focusing on understanding positioning and the clubs’ alignment is critical for success. Additionally, the golf team has also been practicing on putting and reading greens.
This year, the team’s atmosphere and chemistry is strong, and has a good open line of communication and feedback among new and first-time players. “Support and motivation come with helping others improve on swing mechanics, which are essential in golf”, said Senior Sergio Ramirez.
The team urges that even a small misalignment in a player’s swing can have a big impact on the shot’s accuracy. A key player to keep an eye on this season in golf according to Coach Oulman is Junior Wyatt Sadness, the team’s best golfer is hopefully pushing for state this season.
With a promising mix of new players and returning players, this season is in for an exciting chapter for the golf team. As the players continue to build up their confidence and get better with fundamentals, and grow through competition, the emphasis on development and teamwork is already setting a promising outlook for future success.
Whether it’s a first-time player learning to line up a putt or a leader like Sadness chasing a spot at state, every player has a role in the team’s journey to become better. Although the future might be a question mark, one thing is clear: this season is not about the scores or the team’s record, it’s about growth and a shared love for the game.
