With Halloween just around the corner, it’s finally that time of year to start piecing together costumes, carving pumpkins, and cuddling up on the couch to watch scary movies the entire day. While each year there’s always a new spine-chilling movie that releases, no one can forget the classic horror movies that started it all. That being said, go ahead and grab some candy corn and someone to hold onto. Here are the top ten classic horror movies that are bound to keep anyone up at night:
- The Shining (1980) R
Inspired by the book “The Shining” by Stephen King, this movie is an honorable thriller that is actually based off the infamous Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO. (Available on iTunes, Amazon Video, & Google Play)
- Rosemary’s Baby (1968) R
After giving birth, a young mother is convinced her child is not of this world after having weird dreams. She sets out to find the truth about her offspring and wishes she never looked in the first place. Junior Andrea Gomez expressed, “This is honestly one of my favorite movies of all time! - Psycho (1960) R
This black and white film is set at the Bates Motel and is known for it’s notorious shower scene. This movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock is highly credited for being the be all end all of horror movies. According to Rotten Tomatoes, “Because Psycho was filmed with tact, grace, and art, Hitchcock didn’t just create modern horror, he validated it.” (Available on iTunes & Amazon Video)
- Beetle Juice (1988) PG
Although this may not be the most frightening movie on the list it is a really good lighthearted film choice to get into the Halloween spirit. This movie is about a married couple trapped as ghosts in their own house trying to scare out the new family that recently moved in. (Available on iTunes and Amazon Video)
- The Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) R
One of the most popular movie franchises, which has grown more each year, constantly recreates this original movie about teenagers living their nightmares of Freddy Krueger. (Available on iTunes and Amazon Video)
- Evil Dead (1981) R
The Evil Dead is an introduction to the basic horror movie where teens head off to a cabin in the woods for a fun trip and instead lurk through where they don’t belong which in return backfires completely. (Available on iTunes and Amazon Video)
- Carrie (1976) R
Carrie White, a shy and sheltered teenager, is bullied in her small town for being different. After fits of rage, Carrie soon learns she isn’t like everyone else and is finally pushed to her breaking point. (Available on iTunes and Amazon Video )
- Misery (1990) R
When Annie Walkins meets her favorite author Paul Sheldon, things turn for the worst after she realizes she wants him all to herself. Rotten Tomato gives this movie a rating of 89% claiming that “This taut and frightening film is one of the best Stephen King adaptations to date”. (Available on iTunes)
- Poltergeist (1982) PG
This movie takes place in a perfect, white picket fence neighborhood where no one would expect anything to happen until the Freeling family begins to experience strange noises at night and object moving all by themselves. - Stephen King’s It (1990) NR
Another movie based on the novel IT by author Stephen King includes a suspicious clown who terrorizes the children of their town. This gory movie can make anyone afraid of clowns. In fact, the recent clown sightings are thought to be related to the upcoming rendition of the movie It said to be released in 2017. (Available on iTunes and Amazon Video)
