After a hard-fought season, the Rangeview boys varsity soccer team played their last game last Wednesday, November 2nd. Teachers, students, and cheerleaders alike attended the game to support the team. The boys played a close game, but this loss marked the end of their season.
In the second round of playoffs, the team played Arapahoe High School. The soccer team has not been able to make it to the second round of playoffs since the 2013 season. The game was tied 1-1 after double overtime, but the Raiders lost 4-3 in a PK shoot-out. The players were truly devastated.
Coach Vic Strouse said, “I thought they performed really well. We had chances, we were certainly competitive, we certainly played that game. I was very proud of their effort.”
The team played a very successful season, finishing first in the 5A EMAC League. Overall, the team only lost three out of the thirteen games that they played. They also won the game against rival school Gateway during fall break, 3-0.
According to Strouse, “Over the course of the season, they began to acknowledge how important their roles were and how each person contributed to the welfare and the success of the whole team.”
After losing the first game of the season, the team worked hard to bounce back with a seven game winning streak.
Senior captain Orlin Euceda said, “Everyone put in a lot of effort to have a good result at the end of every game.”
With eleven out of twenty players being seniors, next year’s team is predicted to have a lot of new faces. A successful, undefeated season for the junior varsity team means that next year’s varsity team has potential.
“JV was undefeated. So that’s a good sign of the depth of the program. The spots that are open from the graduating seniors will be filled by quality players,” commented JV coach Michael Boyle.
Overall, the boys played a triumphant season. The team made it farther than last year in the CHSAA State Championships. Next year’s team will have a lot to live up to.
