After a long off-season, the lady Raiders are ready to take back their conference title.
Through the 2017-18 season, the Lady Raiders finished with a 12-13 record overall, but finished 8-2 in their conference securing the third best spot in the conference. The girls finished over Gateway, Hinkley, and Northglenn. However, they fell under teams Vista Peak (league champions) and Brighton.
After defeating Thunderidge in the first round as the 40th ranked team in the tournament, they lost in the second round to Fossil Ridge 75-47.
Senior Danae Johnson said, “It [losing to Fossil Ridge] was heartbreaking, but we had a rough season and it felt good to that we made it to the second round.”
The lady Raiders started off the season with an exhibition game against Rangeview’s girl JV team. The team has five returning players and six new players, and managed to win.
The adjustments of the roster range from freshmen to seniors — a larger outcome than last season where the roster was dominantly underclassmen. Sophomores Dalys McGuinnis, Jaedyn Martin, Jayden Jackson and juniors Jewel Watkins and Autumn Kelly and are among the players from last season that aren’t playing this season.
This brings a “big responsibility” to senior and fourth year player Angel Broadus, as she stated.
Broadus said, “My role this season is pretty much to be a leader — a captain — and a teammate because our team is young so half of these girls will use what I give them this year to finish their high school seasons.”
Coach Weddle LaMonte will be coaching for his fifth season coming into the season. In four seasons as head coach, Coach LaMonte has a record of 51-46 — showing that the Raiders are a prominent opponent as said by many.
Boys varsity guard and junior Isaiah Jamison said, “He [Coach LaMonte] is expecting to win their league and develop the girls in order to make a run in the playoffs.”
The lady Raiders have their first game today, November 29th, against Pueblo South at 3:30 pm to start off the short Palmer Tip Off tournament. For more information about upcoming games, scores, and stats, make sure to visit:
