Coming off what many say was a decent season last year, many athletes, whether returning or new, say they are definitely looking forward to this cross country season. The boys team is coming off of an EMAC championship last year and many say that it will bring them motivation going into this year.
“We are definitely a strong team this year and our goal of course is to bring home an EMAC championship again,” stated varsity cross country runner and junior Luke Sundberg.
Luke Sundberg is a returning varsity runner who had made state last year and has started the season out strong already, winning the APS championship this year at his first meet.
“We have a lot of strong runners this year and the team is at about 40 runners on the girls side. I would definitely look out for junior Mahayla Griggs and freshman Chloe Wetzel. Then on the boys’ side of course we have junior Luke Sundberg, junior Ryan Slocum and senior Michael Wolde ,” said Coach Manciu.
Many say that the team’s overall goal is to see everyone compete and get better but also to bring home both the boys and girls EMAC championships.
“The team is definitely working hard and everyone is pushing towards their goals this year,” said junior and captain Beatrise Martinez.
On Tuesday September 11th, the team took on one of the toughest courses in Colorado and many say that they crushed it with three of their boys placing in the top ten. Junior Ryan Slocum took fifth, senior Michael Wolde took third with a time of 18:00, and junior Luke Sundberg took first with a time of 17:40.
Yesterday at the Viking Invitational meet the boys took 5th overall and senior Michael Wolde also took 5th.
The next cross country meet is this Friday, September 21st where they will be competing in the Dave Sanders Invitational.
