The Lady Raiders 2016 basketball season so far has consisted of early and late basketball practices, road trips to tournaments, and playing against some tough opponents.

This past Saturday, the girls played in a game against Cherokee Trail and fell short with a score of 52-31. Junior Aaliyah Smith said, “This season is going pretty good; we usually do good working as a team, but the CT game was tough because we did end up falling apart as a team.”

Since tryouts, the girls have been working on cooperation together and trying to have more positive attitudes. In the beginning of the season, senior Jaelin Jones said, “We had a tough time with attitudes, but we fixed them and started to work as a team.”

According to sophomore varsity player, Shaunte Ford, “We do need to maintain a better workout schedule and the hardest part of the season has been beating tough teams”

Although the team had a rough game, head coach La Monte Weddle says, “This season is going very well, my girls are looking good.”

The varsity team was very confident going into their game against Prairie View on Tuesday. Smith says, “I think we are going to win this game,” continuing, “Our defense has been doing good this season, or at least I think so.” In the home game against Prairie View, the girls came out with the win 64-26.

“The record this year is better than last year’s. We are expected to win our league,” Jones commented.

The team’s overall record is 9-8 and their league record is 4-0. On Friday the team had a big game against Vista Peak, the girls won in overtime 75-68.

This season, the girls are most excited about the rivalry game against Gateway. This game is the last game of the season on Friday, February 17th.

The varsity team’s next game will be today against Adams City at 7 pm at Rangeview.
