The G30S movement was created to remember a tragic incident on September 30, 1965. Six generals of Indonesia were assassinated by members of the PKI (Communist Party of Indonesia). According to Indonesia 1965-1966, “This appeared to be a communist attempt to take control of the country, and although there is a debate about the PKI’s actual involvement, military propaganda falsely claimed that the PKI was about to begin a campaign of murder.”
The Indonesian Generals and Military put together a campaign of mass arrest and murder of the members and those affiliated with the party. The propaganda the military spread stated that the generals’ bodies were chopped to pieces to incite the rage of the civilians. However, that claim cannot be proven by any forensic evidence.
The campaign General Soeharto and the military promoted through film and posters soon began to be put into action in the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta. This violence then spread across the nation, causing murders of more than a million people, all while the murders were conducted by the military and civilian militia. After the movement started to slow down, the transfer of power from Soekarno to Soeharto, and the start of the “Orde Baru” New Order era began.
G30S was prepped by the PKI (Communist Party of Indonesia). They formed a bureau under the leadership of Syam Kamaruzman to plan and prepare for the seizure of power. They plan to bring down the current power at that time, President Soekarno and Vice President Moh Hatta, and replace it with a Communist system of government. The
incident causes the death of six generals of the military; there’s only one general who manages to get away, which is AH Nasution. However, Nasution’s daughter, Ade Irma Nasutio, did not manage to get away, and she was shot and died in that incident.
The truth of this story remains a point of contention among civilians, with some arguing that “The Party” was indeed responsible for the attack, while others dispute this claim, citing a lack of solid evidence that points to “The Party” as the perpetrator. However, there’s a solid motive that could cause the party to pull it together because the power at the moment wanted the country to be a Republic of Indonesia. However, the leader and members of the party wanted Indonesia to have a Communist Governmental System.
The movement resulted in the transfer of power from President Soekarno to General Soeharto. According to Indonesia 1965-1966 “The government of General Suharto, who took power after the massacres, encouraged reports of high death tolls as an additional means of terrorizing the population and used the threat of a PKI return to justify continued repression” This ended up being the reason President Soeharto is a president with the longest period in Indonesia history for over three decades.
Until this point in time, people believed to have a blood connection to those involved in the party meant they could not work in the military or any form of work that involves serving the nation. They were marked by last names and by the written report they had with the names of people at the party. People who have a blood connection can only go to a private college and are not eligible for any financial support from the government. However, they started to lose track, and it’s not as bad for them anymore.
