The news can often be misinforming, especially for high school students. With that being said, the following is a full timeline of the conflict that is going on in Iran.
On February 28th, Iran, the United States, and Israel erupted into war, but what happened? What started this, and how is the United States involved?
During June 2025, Israel and Iran began attacking one another, lasting from June 13 to June 24, 2025. Israel attacked Iran first, as they specifically targeted nuclear and military facilities. This event sets the precedent for the aggression between the two nations.
We fast forward to February 20th, when Trump issued a 10-day deadline for Iran to agree to a nuclear deal. On February 27th, Trump gave the go-ahead for Operation Epic Fury, which authorized military action against Iran.
The next day, on February 28th, coordinated U.S. and Israeli strikes hit Tehran, the capital city of Iran, and other major cities. These strikes killed the supreme leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei and several other top military commanders.
On March 1st, Operation True Promise IV began, which was Iran’s massive retaliatory barrage of hundreds of missiles and drones targeted towards several nations. The United States confirmed three service members were killed during the operation.
The countries targeted are as follows:
Israel: Targeted with ballistic missiles and drones, including strikes near Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
United Arab Emirates: strikes are damaging Dubai International Airport, hotels in Dubai, and facilities in Abu Dhabi.
Saudi Arabia: Areas in Riyadh and the Eastern Province were hit, including the Ras Tanura refinery and areas near the United States Embassy.
Bahrain: military and civilian infrastructure were hit, including the United States Navy’s 5th Fleet headquarters and local airports.
Kuwait: several hits on Kuwait International Airport and other areas hosting the United States military.
Qatar: missiles and drones targeted energy facilities and U.S. military assets.
Oman: The Port of Duqm was struck by drones.
Iraq: Strikes targeted Erbil International Airport and other areas hosting United States-led troops.
Jordan was heavily targeted, but most drones and missiles were struck down.
Cyprus: An Iranian drone struck a runway at a UK Royal Air Force base on the island.
On March 2nd, Iran officially closed the Strait of Hormuz, which immediately spiked global oil prices. Along with this, Hezbollah (Which is a Shia Islamist Lebanese political party and paramilitary group) entered the war by launching rockets at Haifa. Israel responded by bombing Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, and initiating a ground invasion of Lebanon.
The war, as of March 3rd, has no end in sight, but President Trump has stated that the next phase of operations will be “even more punishing” towards Iran. Let it be known that this war was started by the United States and Israel, but this does not excuse the actions of Iran targeting and bombing neutral countries.
